Pie and mash grew up in and around London with its roots stuck firmly in the East End of London.
Early pie and mash is very much different to the dishes we enjoy today, the first pies were filled with eels as these were cheap and plentiful and caught right from the Thames. As years went by the pies were made with minced mutton then more recently minced beef.
Traditionally the pies were made with a suet case and a short flakey top, although you now find many variations individual to each pie & mash shop and their family recipes.
Here at The Alma we are getting our pies and liquor supplied by Goddards of Greenwich who have been established since 1890. The traditional pie & mash set menu comes with Liquor or Gravy.
